Having moved into his "dream house", ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has now secured his five-story Bandra residence with a staggering Rs 100 crore insurance cover, one of the biggest insurance deals by an individual.
The cricket icon has bought the insurance from a consortium of general insurers, according to industry sources.
"A consortium of general insurance companies has given an insurance cover for the cricketer’s home in Bandra for a value consideration of Rs 100 crore," an official of a public sector general insurance company, who wished not to be named, said.
As per the official, all the four state-run GIs along with a private insurer have provided the cover.
" Oriental Insurance Company, United India Insurance, New India Assurance and National Insurance Company are the four government-owned general insurers providing the cover along with a private insurer," the official said, adding the annual premium would be around Rs 40 lakh.
According to another insurance official, the cover has been taken in two parts. While a fire insurance policy has been obtained for Rs 75 crore, an additional cover of Rs 25 crore has been bought for household items like furniture, electronic gadgets and cricket accessories among others.
The fire insurance covers losses from blaze, terror attacks, natural disasters like earthquakes, and burglary among others. The insurance covers the cost of the land, compound walls, besides electrical equipment.
The Tendulkars had moved into the sprawling 6,000 square feet villa in Bandra West in September from a flat that had been allotted to the maestro under sports quota.
"Everyone has a dream of owning a house. I, too, had this dream. I am happy that I was able to fulfil it," Tendulkar had said while moving into his new abode.
The cricketer’s residence stands on a plot that earlier housed a dilapidated bungalow, which he had bought for Rs 39 crore in 2007.
The villa has been secured with high-walled fencing to avoid curious onlookers. CCTV cameras and sensors have also been installed.(PTI)

An Economics researcher claims to have found an answer to one of the biggest debates in international cricket by picking Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar as the greatest Test batsman ever over late Australian legend Sir Donald Bradman.
"Griffith University researcher Dr Nicholas Rohde has used economic theory to compare batsmen from different eras, and says India’s Little Master, who will pad up against the Aussies at the MCG on Boxing Day, is history’s premier willow wielder," reported ’The Australian’.
The 38-year-old Tendulkar has a world-record 15,183 runs from 184 Tests at an average of 56.02 since making his debut in 1989.
Bradman, on the other hand, played 52 Tests from 1928 to 1948, scoring 6996 runs at an astonishing average of 99.94. He died in 2001 aged 92.
Dr Rohde said a theoretical analysis puts Tendulkar above Bradman. "The rankings are designed to allow for meaningful comparisons of players with careers of different lengths," Dr Rohde said.
"It’s an emotional issue and there will always be debate between followers of Test cricket about the relative career performances of various batsmen," he added.
The rankings by the researcher have been created according to a player’s career aggregate runs, minus the total number of runs that an average player of that era would accumulate over the same number of innings.
Allan Border (seven) and Steve Waugh (nine) are the other Australian batsmen in the top 10. Rahul Dravid (fourth) and Sunil Gavaskar (eighth) are the other Indians in the list.
Dr Rohde’s said it was possible that Tendulkar and Bradman could swap their places many times before the Indian retires as a dip in form would affect his standing.(PTI)

Virender Sehwag scored 219 runs from 149 balls, against West Indies in the fourth match of the series at Indore. Sehwag hit 25 fours and 7 sixes on his way to the new world record for the highest individual score in a 50-over match. Shehwag became the second cricketer to make a double century in One Day Internationals. Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was the first to reach the milestone when he scored unbeaten 200 against South Africa in Gwalior on February 24, 2010.

He also went past 8,000 runs in ODIs during the innings.

India scored 418 runs for 5 wickets for 50 overs. Now West Iindies target is 419 to win the match.

New Delhi: Local heroes Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir gave ample display of their class as India relied on a clinical display to spank England by eight wickets in the second cricket one-dayer and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series here Monday.

The Indians first restricted the visitors to 237 all out riding on paceman Vinay Kumar's career-best effort of 4 for 30 before Kohli (112 not out) and Gambhir (84 not out) rattled up the required runs -- with as many as 80 balls to spare on a good batting track at the Ferozshah Kotla.

Kolkata: Former Indian Cricket captain Sourav Ganguly is keen to play the four-day and 50-over Ranji Trophy matches for home side Bengal.

"I am available to play for Bengal in the four-day and 50-over (Ranji) matches. However, I will not be available for the T20 ties," Ganguly told reporters on Monday.

The flamboyant batsman keeps himself fit and undergoes practice sessions at the Eden Garden when he is in the city.

Ganguly, as a chairman of the Cricket Development Committee of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), attended its first meeting at the club house.

Ways and means to develop the game in Bengal was discussed in the meeting, he added.

The CAB on August 24 retained their star-studded cricket development committee led by Ganguly though it met only twice in previous two seasons with little success.

Ganguly continued to be the chairman of the committee that also stars yesteryears cricketers Arun Lal, Ashok Malhotra and Pranab Roy.

Reuters: Australia fast bowler Brett Lee will undergo surgery for appendicitis on Monday and has been ruled out of his country's one-day and Twenty20 fixtures in South Africa, Cricket Australia said.

Lee, who has taken 310 Test and 357 one-day international wickets in a 12-year international career, is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks.

He is certain to miss Australia's two Twenty20s and three ODIs against South Africa in October and is a big doubt for the two Tests that begin on November 9 and 17.

"Brett complained of some abdominal pain after arriving in Cape Town on Sunday," Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said in a statement.

"After consulting specialists and having the relevant investigations he has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will be having surgery in Cape Town later today.

"He will obviously be ruled out of the Twenty20 and ODI series in South Africa and is likely to return to cricket in six to eight weeks."

London: After the Pakistani and Australian players, it's now the turn of Indian top guns to be named in the spot-fixing trial, as Mazhar Majeed claimed that he had access to Yuvraj and Harbhajan Singh.

Majeed also went on to say that he was good friends with former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi, and ex Pakistan captain Imran Khan.

Majeed, who is at the centre of spot-fixing allegations, came up with a series of boasts to the undercover journalist of now defunct News of the World, who posed as an Indian businessman and recorded the conversation.

Majeed told journalist Mazhar Mahmood that he "very well" knew Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, Swiss tennis champion Roger Federer.

He also claimed that he had several Pakistan players under his control, including Salman Butt, Akmal brothers, and Shoaib Malik and had access to other star cricketers like Chris Gayle, Brett Lee, Ricky Ponting.

Hyderabad: After slumping to their second defeat in the ongoing Champions League Twenty20, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday said his side played well in patches but praised opposition batsman Callum Ferguson and Daniel Christian for their match-winning efforts.

Ferguson scored an unbeaten 40-ball 70-run knock and together with Christian (42) added quickfire 84 runs for the fourth wicket to propel South Australia to a competitive 188 for five after opting to bat.

The target eventually turned out to be too steep for KKR as they lost wickets at regular intervals to be restricted to 169 for nine, thereby handing South Australia a 19-run victory.

"I never thought they would get to 180-odd. It was a brilliant effort from Ferguson and Christian," a visibly disappointed Gambhir said after the match.

"Sometimes we've bowled well in patches, and sometimes batted well in patches. At times we haven't complemented our batsmen, sometimes our bowlers," he added.

His counterpart Michael Klinger was also full of praise for Ferguson and Christian, saying the two batsmen laid the basic foundation for South Australia's win.

"The innings from Callum (Ferguson) and Christian were unbelievable. Those two were fantastic, they pushed a lot of twos and ran really hard when the pitch slowed up," Klinger said.

Asked about the reason behind leaving out speedster Shaun Tait for the match, the South Australia skipper said, "We left out Tait purely because of the conditions. Tait, with extra pace, on this wicket is probably slightly easier to play."

Man-of-the-match Ferguson, in turn, credited his partner Christian for his match-winning knock.

"It was difficult early on, took a while to get in.

Christian came in and made it easier for me by hitting some boundaries. We finished the innings well," he said.

Chennai: Call it champion talk or whatever, but Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming asserted that no panic button was pressed and the team was looking to chalk up its first win in the Nokia Champions League T20 tournament when they face Cape Cobras here on Wednesday.

While rejecting the observation that the team was under pressure to perform following the stunning three-wicket defeat to the Mumbai Indians in their opening fixture on Saturday, Fleming said the expectations were always high given the Super Kings' track record.

"We are always under pressure. We were under pressure in the first game. Nothing has changed. I don't know how many wins we need (to go through to the semifinals), whether it is two with a better run rate or it's three, we are always under pressure.

"We put ourselves under pressure as well because we want to win, especially at home. And we want to keep winning competitions, so we don't look to have easy games and there are no easy games.

"There have been some incredible, sensational results in the last two or three games, so that's where the competition is going to go," Fleming pointed out at a media conference, here on Tuesday.

Looking ahead to the game against the Cobras, Fleming said the team was still to sit down to work out a combination or make any drastic changes in the light of Saturday's loss.

"We haven't gone back to the drawing board just because we have had one loss where one player hit 15 or 20. Up to that point, we had won about 95 per cent of the game. So we are not going to rush and change.

"That is not our style. We have got a group of players that has won three competitions. But we're very mindful and if there is a change to be made, we will make it tomorrow after we watch the first game," he said.

Fleming did not put too much emphasis on going into Wednesday's match with a different game plan given the quality openers that the Cobras boast in Richard Levi and Herschelle Gibbs, especially the latter.

"We have got a couple of South African players in our squad, Albie Morkel and Faf du Plessis. We have used their resources, but you can't get too tricky. This is our home ground where we have had a lot of success. Our success has been built on pretty good foundations.

"If you try to change and become something different, then you make mistakes. That's not my style and I know that's not the skipper's (MS Dhoni) style. Herschelle Gibbs is one of the very good players of the shorter form of the game and we saw the other night, how destructive he can be. There will be subtle changes, not anything drastic," said Fleming.

When queried about the pitch and whether it will aid spin, Fleming said the surface remained an unknown quantity.

"We can't really get a straight answer because the curators themselves do not know how it will play. But if we are not sure, we will go with what we know and we have a pretty balanced side to cover most conditions," he said.

Meanwhile, Cobras fast bowler Vernon Philander, while admitting that the Super Kings would be enjoying vociferous crowd support, it would not be huge factor.

"I don't think so. In 2009 Champions League, we played Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bangalore and overcame them. We are not going to get affected by the crowd support," he pointed out.

Philander promised that the Cobras fielding would be much better on Wednesday, unlike in their previous game when they dropped catches in the early overs, but ultimately managed to beat New South Wales Blues quite comfortably.

On his own bowling against the Blues when he took two for 22, Philander said: "I thought the wicket was pretty slow and I tried to mix up my pace and keep it pretty simple," he said.

Super Kings unfazed by loss: Fleming
